YARMOUTH, N.S. – The RCMP are investigating after a masked man armed with what was believed to be bear spray robbed a grocery store in Yarmouth on Dec. 28.

In a Dec. 29 media release, RCMP said police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Main Street grocery store just before 8 p.m. Police said a man entered the store wearing a Halloween-type mask and had what appeared to be bear spray in his hand.

The man demanded cash, which he was given, and then fled the store on foot.

No one was injured during the incident.

In a post on its Facebook page, Yarmouth Freshmart – formerly known as Yarmouth Red and White, located at the corner of Main and Argyle streets – said the individual entered the store at approximately 7:45 p.m.

“Description is a male, approx. 5 foot, 9 inches tall. The bag he is carrying is a zippered insulated bag. The mask is a wolf-like mask that covered the entire face which the individual only put on near the store,” the business wrote in its social media post. “Thankfully, no one was injured and everyone is safe.”

The business – which released images caught on camera – asked the public for help in identifying the person.

“Please contact us or the RCMP if you think you might recognize the mask or clothing,” read the post. “If you live on Argyle Street and surrounding areas and have security cameras and wouldn’t mind taking a look at the footage around 7:30 p.m. (before the incident) and 7:50 p.m. (after the incident) last night, it would be greatly appreciated.”

The RCMP say this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Yarmouth Town RCMP at 902-742-8777 or provide a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. People can also submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips App.
